The history of the Dolomites dates back to the year 1789 when French natural scientist Déodat de Dolomieu discovered a new stone formation during his travels in Tyrol. A thorough analysis in the laboratory showed that this was an entirely new mineral, which was eventually named after its discoverer: “Dolomite”.
The Dolomites were first discovered by tourists in the beginning of the 18th century. From then on, the region was characterized by the visit of vacationers and passionate mountaineers. World War I disrupted this upswing, but not for long. Today, decades later, the Dolomites have been named a UNESCO World Nature Heritage.
